Know Your Pet DNA is a dog DNA testing platform by Ancestry, a leader in consumer genetic testing.
We set out to build capabilities that would help amplify organic social reach and give users an easy way to share their results. The challenge was creating a shareable asset that felt personal and engaging while accommodating varying levels of user-generated content.
Drive organic social media engagement and brand awareness
Create a frictionless sharing experience within the logged-in dashboard
Design dynamic graphics that reflect each pet's unique DNA results
Account for users who haven't uploaded pet photos
The system generates personalized shareable images based on each dog's DNA breakdown. A colorful donut chart visualizes breed percentages, with the pet's name and primary breed prominently displayed. The graphic adapts to each pet's specific results, making every share unique and authentic.
Photo version: When users have uploaded a photo, their dog's image becomes the centerpiece of the graphic, creating an emotional connection that drives engagement.
Fallback version: For pets without photos, a clean icon-based design maintains visual appeal while encouraging users to add images later. Both versions use the same layout structure, ensuring brand consistency.
The share modal presents multiple options: save image to device, copy link, or share directly to Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, or X. A pre-written caption with customizable pet details and branded hashtags (#KnowYourPet #DogDNA) reduces friction while maintaining message consistency.
Copy text feature: Users can easily grab suggested caption text with one click, complete with the @knowyourpet handle and breed breakdown, making it effortless to share across any platform. The message is dynamic to account for pets with a single breed, 50/50 split, or a more diverse breed breakdown.
A carousel interface lets users browse between the photo and fallback versions before sharing, giving them control over which version best represents their pet.
The graphics come in two colorways to match the site's dual-state design system: a light version with white background for marketing contexts, and a dark version with deep green background for the logged-in experience, maintaining visual cohesion with the broader product.
This feature transformed DNA results into shareable moments of pride, turning customers into brand advocates while giving them an easy way to celebrate their pets' unique heritage with their communities.
